The Journey of a Movement can be defined by distinct phases.

1. The Big Idea

A charismatic leader or coaches present an innovative concept offering a solution for struggling players.

And so it goes. Preparations are underway to challenge the establishment overseas. The gunships are circling. Conflict emerges from the sidelines. One individual, naked, anxious, the slogan POSITIVE INTENT written on his body as a symbol, has stumbled through the lines and is removed in secrecy towards an inconclusive loan stint at Derbyshire.

Remember the start, when the world was still young? The initial phase, of uninhibited aggression.

2. Initial Adoration

Movement founders promise a reboot, a brighter tomorrow, camaraderie, redemption together united in belief in the method.

What was this thing at first? A team united feeling good. Body art. Forearms. Determination. Confident masculinity. Of course, The squad insist it’s not a real term, which is funny since it’s not recognized, what was that spectacle?

Yet it’s clear what it is. It’s the player executing a stroke so unconventional it has to be pixelated. It’s the thrill of the leader at his peak, an expression conveying: thoughtful warrior, beard made of wood, hair woven from beaver hide, genuinely raw you half-expect to look down and see him playing in the field bare-chested embracing nature.

It’s the batsman often seen speaking publicly, resembling a happy little woodland creature smartly dressed, saying stuff like we’re challenging norms. Indeed, the atmosphere, initially, was only good energy.

3. Expansion Period

Development stage. Unity enforced by rote learning of the cult’s slogans. These principles can appear contradictory as a test of “true belief”.

Is it just me? The criticism, the outrage, the feeling of letdown post-defeat seems too strong, overdone. The performance was poor in Perth, as is typical there. They were dominated while bowling in a short span as plans unraveled, outplayed by Travis Head batting like England but better, adjusting to the pitch, a performer excelling with a kind of light around him.

Currently, we see the criticism, the frustration, the sense of English Test cricket as a kind of abomination. 4. External Conflict

Challenges surface from failures in the plan. But the cult cannot admit errors. It starts to feed on anger towards critics.

The fact remains, a few days before from the second Test, we have now reached an intriguing moment in the story of this movement. They might succeed overseas in a blur of adrenal disruption. Probably, they could lose just as quickly. In case of defeat it appears we could be witnessing the decline.

Ahead of this, a couple of points to consider about this. Previously, during the initial excitement, of light and heat, I wrote an article labeling it a movement. People were very angry, which proved the point because everyone knows how to confirm that it’s not a closed group is if supporters respond with anger denying scrutiny of the philosophy.

The developments recently are equally notable. It seems that hating Bazball has now become the cult. We have a uniformly angry internet, angry English pundits, images of frustrated followers overseas missing out on play, similar to investors demanding recourse.

On the other hand, there is the broader context of Australia’s more nuanced ingrained annoyance with the aggressive tourists, claiming, the methods you value and have developed as part of your identity from others, well, it’s all a bit of a gag after all.

This is the core issue. All movements are similar. The approach was a phenomenon as the game has its own culture. Or rather, the team has long been exclusive, a circle, a garden party, an insular community with a long history of opaque and ritualistic cult history supporting it. Historically, this was a place where power and access are hoarded. It’s the colonial game of the nation, the early image-makers. And guess what, the nation has its own culture, a series of esoteric hierarchies, a monarchy still exists.

England’s cricketers have been isolated within this world from a young age. Attempting to break free, to foster positivity, they are just repeating their upbringing, building another enclosure, an exclusive group, however with 15 cool guys and a leader encouraging individuality if you fit the mold.

Focus on the moment. Confront risks. Despite efforts, you remain stuck.
