Matteo Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Exceptional Talent in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at Lazio's home ground was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had conceded 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or was there ever a thread keeping it intact from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, before he publicly stated that the club had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Reports that he might quit were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic during matches as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.

The Youngster's Surprising Return

One individual kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this year. He spent last season with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his owning club were attempting to stay there a while longer. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad without replacements.

He signed originally during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances with the club in that campaign, all but one of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His True Position

Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to identify the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
