Crew Member Discloses Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after an attack during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

In the time since reaching space, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She concluded that despite the negativity, considerable good had emerged from the flight, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated spacecraft launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that crossed the edge of space.

The group of women also featured accomplished professionals from different industries.
